
13. The Last Supper

Jesus healed the sick, fed the poor, and worked for the weak. However, some people did not like the fact that Jesus was loved by everyone. The chief priests and other important people were jealous of Jesus. Judas noticed this and went to the chief priests and asked:

How much will you give me if I help you hand that man over?
Chief Priest

You are one of his disciples. How could you do that?
Judas

I can do it if you pay me a reasonable reward.
Narrator

Judas received thirty pieces of silver. At this time, Jewish people were celebrating a festival called Passover. Jesus was going to Jerusalem to celebrate with his disciples.

Where shall we prepare the meal?

You will see a man with a water jar. Ask him and he will guide you.
Narrator

Disciples found the man.

My teacher told me to ask you about the meal.

He took the disciples to the room and they found everything they needed to start the meal.

Later that evening, the Passover meal began. Suddenly, Jesus stood up slowly, took a towel, and started to wash the disciples'feet.

You shouldn't wash my feet.

If I don't wash your feet, we are not friends. I want to be close to you.

Then, I want you to wash not just my feet, but also my hands and my head.

If you bathed, they are completely clean, so I only need to wash your feet.

Jesus wanted to teach the disciples how to act like Jesus. He wanted them to do the same as He did to their friends. They sat around the table again. Jesus took some bread and blessed it and said:

This is my body, which is given for you. Remember me when you eat it.

Jesus gave out the bread. Then, he took a cup of wine. He blessed it and said:

This is my blood of the new covenant. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.

Jesus continued very sadly.

One of you is going to turn against me.

The disciples looked at each other surprisingly. Everyone said it wasn't them.

Jesus gave bread to Judas.

Judas accepted the bread and went out at once. It was night. Then, Jesus looked at Peter.

I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.

Then, Jesus took disciples to Gethsemane to pray.

It was now the day before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had always loved those in the world who were his own, and he loved them to the very end.
